Rising vegetable prices force Indian families to rethink their meals

A new survey has unveiled the harsh realities faced by Indian households grappling with skyrocketing vegetable prices, leading many to reassess their diets. Conducted by LocalCircles, it reveals that nearly half of Indian households surveyed report paying exorbitant prices for staple vegetables, with tomatoes, onions, and potatoes becoming unaffordable.

According to the survey, nearly 50% of households are now paying more than ₹75 per kilogram for tomatoes, ₹50 for onions, and ₹40 for potatoes. This alarming trend comes as annual inflation reached a nine-month high of 5.49% in September, primarily driven by higher vegetable prices.

Inflation has remained particularly sticky in food and beverages at 9.24% in September 2024. Food accounts for nearly 50% of India’s Consumer Price Index (CPI).

The LocalCircles survey highlights the strain on family budgets as essential vegetables become luxuries. The cost of a vegetarian thali has surged by 11% year-on-year, with significant price increases for key vegetables like onions and potatoes.

This surge in cost is a direct consequence of disrupted supplies and crop damage, leading to an alarming rise in cost of living.

Households Adapt: Reduced consumption or budget shopping?

As prices soar, 29% of families have scaled back their vegetable consumption, the LocalCircles survey shows, while others seek cheaper sources to maintain their diets amidst financial strain.

Government Interventions Fall Short: Calls for nationwide support

The government has attempted to intervene by offering subsidised onions in cities like Delhi, but critics argue that these efforts are insufficient. Many are calling for more comprehensive support measures, including reductions in fuel prices, to help ease the financial burdens faced by families across the country.

As households navigate this challenging landscape, the survey underscores the urgency for a systemic change to address the rising cost of living and ensure food security for all citizens.
